چکیده

We present an extensive study of the radiative transfer in dusty galaxies based on Monte Carlo simulations. The main output of these simulations are the attenuation curves Aλ (i.e. the ratio between the observed, dust extinguished, total intensity to the intrinsic unextinguished one of the galaxy as a function of wavelength). We have explored the dependence of Aλ on a conspicuous set of quantities (Hubble type, inclination, dust optical thickness, dust distribution and extinction properties) for a large wavelength interval, ranging from 1250Å to the K band, thus finally providing a comprehensive atlas of dust extinction in galaxies, which is electronically available. This study is particularly suitable for inclusion into galaxy formation evolution models and to directly interpret observational data on high redshift galaxies. Subject headings: dust, extinction – galaxies: ISM – galaxies: evolution – radiative transfer

Monte Carlo simulations of dusty spiral galaxies: extinction and polarization properties

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We present Monte Carlo simulations of dusty spiral galaxies, modelled as bulge + disk systems, aimed to study their extinction and polarization properties. The extinction parameters (absorption and scattering) of dust grains are calculated from Mie's theory for a full distribution of sizes and materials; the radiation transfer is carried on for the four Stokes...

Dust Attenuation in Hydrodynamic Simulations of Spiral Galaxies

We study the effects of dust in hydrodynamic simulations of spiral galaxies when different radial metallicity gradients are assumed. SUNRISE, a Monte-Carlo radiative-transfer code, is used to make detailed calculations of the internal extinction of disk galaxies caused by their dust content. SUNRISE is used on eight different Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of isolated spiral ga...

Modelling the Interstellar Medium of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies: Constraining Internal Extinction, Disk Color Gradients, and Intrinsic Rotation Curve Shapes

We use a combination of three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer techniques and multiwavelength (BRHK, Hα) imaging data to investigate the nature of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the edge-on, low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 7321. Using realistic models that incorporate multiple scattering effects and clumping of the stars and the interstellar material, we explore the distribu...

Radiative Transfer in Spiral Galaxies

The internal dust extinction in spiral galaxies can affect our understanding of their structure and morphology, as well as our perception of the distant universe in the background. The intrinsic properties of the stellar and dust components can be studied by comparing the observed appearance of a dusty spiral in the optical with a radiative transfer model. The absorbed starlight is re-radiated ...

SUBMILLIMETER EMISSION FROM TYPE Ia SUPERNOVA HOST GALAXIES AT Z = 0.5

We present deep submillimeter observations of 17 galaxies at z 1⁄4 0:5 that are hosts of a Type Ia supernova. Two galaxies are detected directly, and the sample is detected statistically with a mean 850 m flux of 1:01 0:33 mJy, which is 25%–135% higher than locally. We infer that the mean value of AV in normal galaxies at z 1⁄4 0:5 is comparable to or greater than the mean AV in local normal ga...
